Why Sports Teams can
Help Sustainability Programs

Sports teams have a unique way of inspiring change by leveraging their influence and resources to promote
environmental stewardship, implement green initiatives at venue sites, and inspire fans to adopt eco-conscious behaviours. Their influence has a way of reaching communities, sparking change.

Sports have the capacity of doing so in the following ways:
1. Promoting Environmental Stewardship
Athletes as role models can be one of the great environmental
advocates on social media, as they can use their platform to raise awareness about environmental issues and encourage fans to adopt sustainable practices.
Sport teams can organize campaigns where their fans can be educated more on the environment and encourage them to adopt sustainable practices. Additionally, sport teams can partner with environmental organizations to host events, raise funds, and
promote sustainable solutions.

2. Implement Green Initiatives within their Operations
Various Sports teams can invest in renewable energy
sources to power sport facilities where they practice at and where they hold important games. They can implement comprehensive waste management programs to lower consumption of plastic waste and reuse their food waste as biofuels or compost.
Sports teams can also invest in electric vehicles for transporting their
teams and equipment from one location to another and promote fans to reach the venues in eco-friendly manner such as carpooling, using public transportation, and cycling to reduce the carbon emissions.

3. Inspiring Fans and Communities
. By leading as example, sport teams can encourage large communities to be more environmentally conscious by creating green fan zones, educating their fans about the small action steps they can take in their daily lives to protect our natural environment.
